Vittorio Emmanuel was born in the Royal Palace of Turin to King Vittorio Amadeo III of Sardinia and his wife Infanta Maria-Antonia of Spain. He was created the Duke of Aosta at birth and became the King of Sardinia-Piedmont on 4 Jun 1802.

On 21 April 1789, he married Terese, Archduchess of Austria. They were the parents of 6 children-
Maria-Beatrice (Archduchess of Austria), Maria-Adelina Clothilda Xaviera (died young), Carlo-Emanuele (died young), Maria-Anna Ricarda Carolotta Margerita (Empress of Austria), Maria-Teresa Fernanda Felicia (Queen of Etruria), and Maria-Cristina Carlotte (Queen of Two Sicilies).

He died at the Moncalieri Castle in Turin.
