Death claimed J. T. Davis, 64, last night at 6:15 just beyond the curve in the Phillips road when the car driven by W. D. Schoonover ran him down, breaking his neck, crushing the left side of the face, and severely cutting his scalp, hands and left leg. He died instantly.

Schoonover and B. E. Jones, who struck the aged man, picked up Davis and carried him to the Pantex hospital. Officers G. L. Warren and Cal Baird were notified and investigated the accident.

Schoonover and Jones made a statement to the officers and to County Attorney Jack Lackey. The driver told officers that he was driving toward Phillips and that Davis was walking in the same direction. He said that just before he hit Davis a Car Passed him, partially blinding him. Schoonover said he did not see Davis until just before the accident.

"Davis was walking about three or four feet over from the edge of the road, " the driver said. "I did not see him until just before the impact. I was driving at a normal rate of speed, about 35 miles an hour when the accident happened." Schoonover said that the right headlight and fender hit the man. The impact broke the light.

"Apparently it was an unavoidable accident, " County Attorney Lackey said.

Davis was born in Goseta, Alabama. He came to Borger five years ago from Dallas. He was a carpenter by trade, but had been on the relief roll since October 31, 1933. He was living at the Chapman Rooms, back of the Metropolitan hotel.
