Manuel was born after his parents had five girls born to them. You can imagine how excited they were to finally have a baby boy. He was given his father's name. The story has been handed down in the family that Manuel was a beautiful big baby and photographs taken of him would support that. The lady who was helping to take care of him after his birth was said to have rubbed his umbilical area too often causing a hemorrage of his umbilical cord. Manuel bled to death. Manuel was said to have been buried by the back of the church, but no stone can be found. Elsie Vargas Anderson, his sister, believed that he may have been buried with his aunts, Mary (Sarmento) and Louise (Lizzie Oliver) , sisters of his mother. They were buried on the hill cemetery in Mission San Jose, so there is a possibility that baby Manuel is also there.
