Enlisted in early 1898 in Troop 3, Squadron A, NYNG, New York City. He mustered in for Spanish American War service, with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, June 8, 1898, at Camp Alger, VA. After training at Camp Alger Troop A, shipped out for Puerto Rico from Newport News, VA, aboard the transport Massachusetts, July 28, 1898. Troop A, NY Vol. Cavalry came ashore, August 4, 1898, at Playa port of Ponce. The Troop participated in the Puerto Rico campaign, and was assigned to the Headquarters of General Miles, preforming detached service. Troop A departed for the States, September 3, 1898, docking at Jersey City, NJ, September 10, 1898. He was discharged from volunteer service ahead of his Troop ( reason unknown ), October 7, 1898.

His brother Hamilton Fish Benjamin was also a member of Squadron A, 1901 -1905. His future business partner Irving Ruland, was a Corporal in Troop A, NY Vol. Cavalry and his son in law, Richard M Carver was a member of Squadron A and served with the Squadron ( 105th Machine Gun Battalion ) in World War 1.

His father, Samuel Nicholl Benjamin was a Civil War, Medal of Honor recipient.
