Religious Figure. Girolamo Savonarola was a Dominican priest. He took a severe and critical stand against the church, it's clergy and the Renaissance in general. His stand against the Pope and the Medici family had him excommunicated, arrested, tortured and finally martyred by burning at the stake in Florence Italy in 1496 at 44 years of age. Some of his actions and beliefs are inconsistent with his Christianity. Book burning, destroying other's property [fine art that he found offensive - he even had Sandro Boticelli cast more than a few of his masterpieces into the many bonfires], direct conversation with God and the Saints. But as an immoveable object in the history of the Church Savonarola has few equals. Perhaps that and his martyrdom are why he is almost always included in any canonical list of Christian heroes. Even the Catholic church has recanted his ex-communication and burning at the stake as improper. The ashes of Savonarola and two of his lieutenants were thrown into the Arno River beside the Ponte Vecchio. His bones were broken up and mixed with wood and refired several times because ecclesiastical authorities did not want Savonarola's followers to have any relics for a future veneration of the rigorist preacher they considered a saint.
