Her first husband was James Hiram Edward Ballou. Emma was listed as a widow in 1880 census but they had actually divorced 1876-79. In 1959, the obituary of Emma's son James Ballou included all of his surviving half-siblings. One sister was from Emma's next marriage to William James Castle. The rest of the siblings were from James Ballou's next two marriages.

Also interesting: Emma (Newberry) and her husband James Ballou were double first cousins. Her mother was a Ballou and his mother was Norbery variation. Emma and James had the same 2 sets of grandparents.

She married (2) William James Castle in 1881 in Kansas. They were the parents of George Castle and Rose Castle Rouse. The family moved to Missouri and in 1918, to Colorado.
