Alden Hitchcock Smith Sr was born on June 14, 1906 in Mount Pleasant, Maury County, Tennessee, the son of E Dan Smith and Mary Elizabeth (Farnsworth) Smith.

He attended Battle Ground Academy in Franklin and graduated from Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee before going on to graduate from Vanderbilt University and doing graduate study at Boston University and Harvard Business School.

He was married 1st to Elizabeth Dibrell (1904–1951) on November 11, 1930 at the home of the bride's mother, and Elizabeth was the daughter of George Stratton Dibrell and Elizabeth White "Bessie" (Murrey) Dibrell. After the death of Elizabeth, he was married 2nd in 1953 as the 2nd husband of Josephine Weakley (Douglass) Harwell (1903–1966).

Alden had volunteered for the US Army Air Corps during World War II and served as an intelligence officer for a troop carrier squardron.

He was a former salesman for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and was #1 in annual sales for 3 years among the company's several thousand salesmen. He was also one of the founders and a partner in the former insurance firm of Smith, Reed & Thompson. Alden was a past president and member of the Nashville Association of Life Underwriters, and was also a member of West End United Methodist Church and attended its Benton (Backsliders) Sunday School Class. He was a past chairman and former member of the church's administrative board, chairman of several of its fund-raising campaigns and a host and greeter for the Room In The Inn Program. He was one of the founders of the United Givers Fund - later known as United Way - and chairman of its 1st annual campaign. He was also chairman of the campaign to build the Boys and Girls Clubs building, a past president and member of the Downtown Rotary Club, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Masonic Lodge #5 in Mount Pleasant and a member of Belle Meade Country Club.

Retired as a special life insurance agent for William S Cochran General Agency and a role model for other agents, Alden was 93 years old and a widower when he passed away on August 6, 1999 at home.

Survivors included sons Alden H Smith Jr and E Dan Smith II, stepdaughter Evalina Harwell Andrews, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on August 9th at West End United Methodist Church, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
