Civil War Union Army Officer. A veteran of the Seminole Wars and the Mexican War, he was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company K, 23rd Pennsylvania (Three-Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 21, 1861, and served until mustered out on July 31, 1861.

He was then commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company K, 68th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862. He was promoted to Captain and company commander on June 18, 1863, replacing the resigned Captain Oscar F. Betson. He served in this capacity until the end of the war. On April 3, 1865 he was promoted to Major, but was never mustered in at that rank, and he was still a Captain when he was mustered out of service with his regiment on June 9, 1865 at Hart's Island, New York City, New York. On April 9, 1865 he was brevetted Major, US Volunteers.

Originally interred in the now defunct Lafayette Cemetery, he was re-interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery on April 28, 1899.
