William B. Westrope died at his home in this city on last Wednesday evening at
11:50 of a complication of diseases, mainly brought on by a fall last summer in
which he broke his hip and later had a severe attack of the grippe. Mr. Westrope
was born in Kentucky, February 27, 1827,and from there moved with his parents to
Belmont, Wisconsin, in 1831, where he married Miss Sarah Evans, who survives
him, in 1849. Shortly after his marriage he went to California during the gold
craze of '49 and again made the trip across the plains with a brother in 1852
when they took a herd of cattle, requiring six months to make the trip. He
continued to reside in Wisconsin until abut fifteen years ago when he went to
Nebraska and lived there for two years, coming then to Corning where he has
since resided. At the time of his death he was 78 years, 3 months and 8 days of
age. Besides the aged companion he leaves a family of five living children they
being Mrs. Mary E. Broman of Madison, Wisconsin; H. [enry] E. Westrope of this
city; Mrs. Jessie E. Jett of Smithson, Missouri; Geo. G. Westrope of Beldon,
Nebraska; W. [illiam] S. [herman] Westrope of LaPlata, Missouri. The funeral was
held yesterday from the residence at 2:30 p. m., conducted by Rev. A. G. Graves
assisted by Rev. J. A. Lovejoy. Interment in Walnut Grove cemetery.

Died - On last Wednesday night William B. Westrope of this city, passed into the
great beyond, after a long siege of suffering from the results of a fall last
year, when he broke a limb, and from which he never fully recovered. Mr.
Westrope was well known to most of the people of Adams county, his business
having brought him in touch with most of our people. He was 78 years of age at
the time of his death, having been born in Kentucky on the 27th of February,
1827. Most of Mr. Westrope's earlier life was spent in Wisconsin, where he dealt
extensively in cattle. He was married in 1849 to Miss Sarah Evans, sister of H.
Clay Evans, ex-commissioner of pensions. Five children, beside the widow,
survive Mr. Westrope. They are: Mrs. Mary Beaumont, of Madison, Wisconsin; Mrs.
Jessie Jett, of Smithton, Missouri; George G., of Beldon, Nebraska; W. [illiam]
S. [herman], of LaPlata, Missouri, and H. [enry] E., of this city. During the
gold excitement in California Mr. Westrope was one of the "49ers" who crossed
the plains at the hazard of their lives to seek the shining nuggets on the
coast. The funeral services were conducted from the residence on Friday
afternoon, Rev. A. G. Graves of the Congregational church, officiating, and
interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery.
