Woodville Examiner, 12 March 1919
HUGHES - At the residence, Woodlands Road, Woodville, on 11th March, 1919, Elizabeth Anne, beloved wife of David Hughes; aged 73 years.
Obituary One by one the old residents are passing away. It is now our duty to record the death of Mrs Hughes, wife of Mr David Hughes, chairman of the Woodville County Council for some years. Mrs Hughes was born in Wales 73 years ago and came to New Zealand in 1876, first settling in Napier and subsequently in Woodville, residing off Woodlands Road for over 30 years. She has thus seen the progress of the district and has watched the evolution of Woodville from Primeval forest to its present stage of development. For eleven years the late Mrs Hughes had been an invalid and for the last four years of that period she had been bedridden. She was devotedly attended during her protracted illness by her daughter, Miss Hughes. Besides husband and daughter, there are three sons left to mourn the loss of their mother, Messrs David E. Hughes, Dannevirke, William Hughes, Wellington and Alfred Hughes, Pohangina. Very great sympathy will be felt for the bereaved by a numerous circle of friends.
