BERRIEN SPRINGS - Nancy Jane Backus, 69, of Royalton Township passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome).

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday, December 11 at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman with Rev. Thomas Brazinsky of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glendora officiating. Burial will be in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to Lakeland Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Nancy was born July 19, 1939 in Berrien Springs the daughter of the late John and Veronica (Hudak) Zandarski. On September 22, 1962 she married Harold L. Backus and together they raised two daughters. Nancy enjoyed flower gardening, collecting, and spending time with her two grandchildren. Nancy had been employed at Whirpool Financial and Pemco Die Casting in Bridgman before retiring.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Harold; two daughters – Jackie (Rob) Buck of Kalamazoo and Vickie Backus of Bozeman, Montana; two granddaughters – Anna and Audrey Buck; three brothers – Vincent (Eleanor) Zandarski of Stevensville, Julius (Margo) Zandarski of St. Joseph, and Richard (Edna) Zandarski of Bradenton, Florida; and two sisters – Elsie (James) Griffith of Benton Harbor and Stella Adent of Bradenton, Florida.

Nancy was also preceded in death by three brothers – Alex Zandarski, John Zandarski, and Stephen Zandarski; and two sisters – Anna Rice and Ruth Toney.
