Arriving in Vietnam, Walter was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Walter died as a result of a gunshot wound from hostile small arms fire in the vicinity of the Ridge Line and River Valley and 10 kilometers west northwest of the Cam Lo Village, during Operation Hastings.
Survived by his stepfather and mother; Bertrand C and Dona M Allshouse of Richfield, MN and his father; Chester Brown of Indianapolis, IN.
