MUSCATINE, Iowa - Delbert A. Brookhart, 85, of Muscatine, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a battle with cancer.

Funeral Service will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, 1931 Houser Street. Reverend Leif Pohl of the Grace Lutheran Church will officiate the service. Honorary Bearers will be Steve Hindahl, Danny Chick, Rudy Chick, Bobby Hubbard, Tom Howland, Davey Phillips, Richard Hamilton, and Willard Zaehringer. Casket bearers will be Jeff Shellabarger, Tony Shellabarger, Jim Wittmer, Joe Barton, Liam Healy, and Mike Morgan. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the combined squads of the American Legion Post 27 and the V.F.W. Post 1565.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Delbert was born on March 23, 1919, in Letts, the son of Arthur and Leota Courtney Brookhart. He married J. Iris Meakes from London, England, on June 13, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corp. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Three Oak Leaf Cluster Medal.

He was a member of the Caterpillar Club, V.F.W. Post 1565, and the Moose Lodge #388.

He was a retired farmer, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, playing cards and going to the riverboats.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Brookhart of Muscatine; one son, Paul A. Brookhart and wife, Rhea, of Mystic, Iowa; two step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; one step-great great-grandson; one brother, LeRoy Brookhart and wife, Dixie, of Muscatine., one sister-in-law, Jeanne Shellabarger of Muscatine; several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Richard Shellabarger, of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Leota Brookhart and one sister, Mildred Wittmer.
