Michael Long of Peoria,Illinois,enlisted in Co.E,3rd Michigan Infantry on May 13,1861 at Grand Rapids.He re-enlisted at Culpepper,Va.on Feb.18,1864 and was promoted to First Sergeant.After transferring to the 5th Michigan Inf.,he was discharged to accept a commission as Captain,Co.F 3rd Michigan (reorganized)Infantry on July 29,1864.He was made Brevet Major,U.S.Vols."for gallant and meritorious service in the field during the war" on March 13,1865.On May 25,1866,he was mustered out at Victoria,Texas.He fought in the battles of Bull Run,Yorktown,Fair Oaks,Richmond,Manassas,Chancellorsville,Fredricksburg,The Wilderness and Gettysburg.
