He was the brother of Billy the Kid. He claimed to have been in Indiana, but the evidence shows he was born in New York. He accompanied his mother and brother, Henry, to Witchita, Kansas in 1870. In 1873 they were in Santa Fe where his mother married William Antrim and they moved to Silver City, New Mexico where the mother died in 1874. Joe became a drifter and was reported to be a cook in an Albuquerque hotel in 1883, and a bartender in El Paso before wandering to Denver where he died. No one claimed his body so it was given to the Colorado Medical School.
