William Albert Hawks, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stone) Hawks, passed away January 21, 1963, at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 21 days. He was born near Bruning, Nebraska, and was baptized by immersion in the Methodist Church at Belvidere on January 30, 1890.
He had spent his entire life in the Bruning Community, attending the public school and later taking a pharmacy course at Fremont Normal College.  His college career was disrupted when called home to assist his father with farming.
"Twink" as he was better known to all his friends, was an ardent baseball fan and played on many surrounding teams, including the Kansas City All Nations. He enlisted in the service of his country on March 4, 1918, at Hebron and was honorably discharged at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina, on February 26, 1919.
On December 24, 1931, he was united in marriage to Mary Jorn at Belleville, Kansas.  They lived on his farm four miles east of Bruning until later moving to their present location south of Bruning.
Besides his loving wife, he leaves to mourn, one sister, Mrs. Ollie Lahners of Montebello, Calif., two brothers, Thomas A. and Earl of Bruning; two nephews, Fieldon Hawks of Bruning and Rolland Lahners of Los Angeles, Calif., two nieces, Mrs. Dorothy Garrels and Mrs. Imogene Chance of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Loyd.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. L. Flickinger, were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Bruning.  A quartet-- Mrs. Larry Abker, Mrs. Wayne Thompson, Duane Messman and Edwin Messman-- sang, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Harold Uden. Pallbearers were Kenneth Kerwood, Ernie Schulte, Bernard Hinrichs, John Remmers, Hollis Dittmer and Melvn Dittmer.
Interment was in the Bruning Public Cemetery where the American Legion firing squad accorded military honors.
