(amateur photographer)

WIFE - Barbara (Polk) Washburn

Bradford Washburn,
was 'The Father of The Modern
MUSEUM OF SCIENCE',
in Boston, Mass.
He had many diverse interests.

Washburn, and his wife Barbara,
were most identified with
North America's Mount McKinley
or Denali Mountain.
At 20,320 feet, the mountain
had been considered one of the
most difficult in the world
to climb.

The rise from its plateau to
it's summit, exceeds that of
Mount Everest, by 6,000 feet.
It's proximity to the jetstream
and high latitude, increase the
chances of altitude sickness
and harsh weather. All of this
combined, helps to explain how
remarkable his accomplishments
were for his era.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1947, Mr. Washburn became
the first man to reach
the Denali summit twice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Barbara Washburn -his wife
became the first woman
at the Denali summit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After 10 yrs. of research
on the mountain, including
drawing detailed maps and
taking sountless photographs,
Mr. Washburn devised a
different route to the
Denali summit.
The 'WEST BUTTRESS ROUTE',
eased the ascent and
opened the mountain
to many more climbers.
He was 96 years old
at the time of death.
