Obituary:
Eugene Ott, age 76, of Skanee, MI, and formerly of West Olive, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI. He was born February 3, 1932, in Grand Haven to Julius and Emilie (Bethke) Ott, and he married the former Julia Warner on October 22, 1955, in Grand Haven. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2000. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven, on July 25, 1998. Two brothers, Ralph Ott and William Ott, also preceded him in death. Mr. Ott lived most of his life in the Tri-Cities area and had been employed as an electrician for Whittaker Electric and the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power where he designed and built the "Christmas Star" which is still in use today. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a former member of the American Legion Post #28 in Grand Haven as well as a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Eugene was instrumental in starting the Baraga County Snowdrifters Club and was a dedicated member. He was also a member of the Skanee Wilderness Riders or the self-named "Over-the-Hill Four-Wheeler Gang." One of his many hobbies was woodworking and cabinet-making. He received much joy out of feeding and watching the birds year-round. He was the light of his grandchildren's lives, and he will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Kurt) Myers of Freesoil and Karen (Bruce) Marshall of West Olive; a son, Richard (Rose) Ott of Canby, Oregon; thirteen grandchildren: Jacob, Isaac, Meghan, Jennifer, Troy, Nathaniel, Joseph, Benjamin, Hope, Kevin, Stephanie, Tyler, and Emilie; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ervin (Shirlie) Ott of Skanee, MI. The service for Eugene will be held at 12 noon Monday, March 3, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Dieter Haupt officiating. Friends may meet the family 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery.
