Mr. Benjamin Lucas, Sr. one of Charleston's oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home in this city yesterday after having been an invalid for the past seventeen years. Mr. Lucas was born in Egeman County, England in 1817, but came to Charleston when but a lad. His energy and ability soon placed him in the march of progress and he became most successful and very popular in his adopted home. In years past Mr. Lucas was ever ready to respond to the various calls of duty which his fellow citizens assigned. He was an alderman of the city for eight consecutive years, a member of the legislature and commissioner of the public schools. Seventeen years ago an unfortunate accident made him an invalid and this withdrew him entirely from public life. He was a man of sterling qualities and genial disposition and had hosts of friends.
