On February 13, 1864 as Norman H. Camp, he married Emma A. Winn in the State of Rhode Island.

On May 9, 1861, he enlisted at New York City in Company C, New York 5th Volunteer Infantry Regiment known as the Duryee's Zouaves as a Corporal. On October 28, 1861, he was promoted to Full Sergeant. He mustered out on October 29, 1861. On October 29, 1861, he was commissioned an officer in Company K, New Jersey 4th Infantry Regiment. On October 29, 1861 he was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant. On March 3, 1863, he was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant. He mustered out on March 3, 1863. On March 3, 1863, he was commissioned an officer in the Regular Army Signal Corps Infantry. On March 13, 1865 he was promoted to Brevet Captain and then to Brevet Major. He mustered out on June 5, 1865.

During the early part of the war he enlisted with the Zuaves and later was detailed to the Signal Corps, being brevetted to the rank of captain. He attained the rank of major for bravery in action.

Camp. On Friday, February 16, 1912 after an illness of several months, Major Norman H. Camp. Remains may be seen by friends of the family at Gawler's Chapel, 1730 Pennsylvania Avenue. Funeral from St. Stephen's Church, Fourteenth Street, between Columbia Road and Irving Street Northwest on Monday, February 19. Interment (private) at Arlington National Cemetery.
