Hall of Fame College Football Coach. After attending Muskingum College (Ohio), he coached high school football and served as an assistant to Sid Gillman at Miami University (Ohio) in 1944. In 1945, he returned to Muskingum College as head coach and remained at that capacity until 1966. During his tenure, he guided his teams to six Ohio Conference Championships and amassed 141 career wins. He was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980. During his post-coaching years, Sherman served on numerous NCAA committees and was their secretary-treasurer. In 1973, he was chairman of the committee which devised the NCAA divisional structure. In 1982, he was recipient of the James J. Corbett Award and was given a White House citation for his contributions in athletics. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
