Bert and his brother George "Dill" Whitaker came to Tucumcari in 1906, from North Carolina. They came by way of Comanche, OK. They rode horses from Murphy, NC to Nashville, TN, where they sold the horses then came by train to Comanche, OK. They farmed in Oklahoma for a year or two before coming to Tucumcari. They came from Oklahoma in a covered wagon. After leaving Amarillo, they lost the trail and wandered about. They ran out of food before they finally got to where their parents, JL and Sarah, were living.
He was married to Vinnie Lumpee Whitaker, and was stepfather to her children, Doris, Earl, Clarence, Alta and Paul.
