Frank J. Asplund, age 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Brainerd on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009.
Frank was born in Cloquet, Minn., on April 4, 1933, to Gust and Mabel (Strum) Asplund. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He married Kay Gilchrist on Jan. 29, 1954. They settled in Brainerd in 1961 and were members of First Lutheran Church.
Frank is survived by a daughter, Sunnie (Scott) Estey, of Nisswa; sons, Jon (Sue), of St. Cloud, Paul, of Los Angeles, Keith (Paula), of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Reed, Adrienne, Zachary, Nicholas, Samantha, Kelsey and Jeremy; and great-granddaughter, Lydia.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kay; his sister, ReVae; and his parents.
Frank enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, spending time with his family and telling jokes. He served on the Brainerd City Council and most recently on the Public Utilities Commission
Services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Rev. Kristin Oltmann officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd with military honors provided by the Brainerd American Legion Post 255 Color Guard. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and will continue the hour before services at the church on Thursday.
