Bill Roberts was the son of William James Roberts and his wife, Myrtle Peacock, of Amsterdam, New York. His father worked for the postal service.

He attended Fulton Montgomery Community College before leaving New York to study theatre arts at Baylor University in Texas, where he worked in the registrar's office and joined a service organization.

Bill died at Scott & White Hospital from food-born hepatitis. Twenty-one years old.
