Dora Pauline Wadell Cowherd died at her home, September 23, 2009, Sedalia, Mo. She was born on Oct 13, 1930, at the family home built by her Grandparents in 1906, at 210 E. Oak Warrensburg, Mo. She was the daughter of Henry A. Wadell and Margaret L. DeMint Wadell. She was married in the same house to Jacque McCoid Cowherd on June 24, 1950, by the Rev. Robert N. Arbaugh of the Warrensburg Methodist Church.
She was baptized as an infant and joined as a young girl in the Warrensburg Methodist Episcopal Church South. By the year 1939, the two Methodist Churches had united as one. She was member of the Junior Choir who participated in the ceremonies to unite the two congregations. She was a member of First United Methodist in Sedalia more than 50 years.
Her name is on the Charter in Warrensburg as a member of the Order of Rainbow for Girls. She held the office of Worthy Advisor. Later she was a Missouri Grand Officer to the State of Maine serving one year, and a Missouri Grand Officer to the State of Alaska, Washington, & Oregon. She was Missouri Grand Musician for one year. She was honored by given the Grand Cross of Color.
Her schooling began at Pershing Grade School. She was a graduate of Warrensburg Public High School in the class of 1948. After two years at Central Mo. State College, marriage, and motherhood, her college degree would have to wait! Her family took precedence over the college degree until 1965 when she received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Central Missouri State University. She was a teacher in the Sedalia Public School District #200 for 25 years.
She was a life member in several organizations, including: the Delta Zeta Sorority at CMSU; National Education Association; Missouri State Teachers Organization; Johnson County Historical Society at Warrensburg, Mo.; Past President and a Life Member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the First United Methodist Church; Past President of the Horace Mann School PTA. She was Past President of Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers organization were she received the honor given by them "You Showed Us Award". She belonged to the Osage Chapter of the Daughters' of the American Revolution at Sedalia, Mo.; and the American Association of University Women.
Besides her loving husband she leaves 3 children: Dr. Jacque A. Cowherd (wife Karen), Cathleen A. Watts (husband Steven) and Susan L. Duckworth. There are 6 grandchildren: Sara L (husband Jason) Wilson, St. Louis, Mo., Allen M. Cowherd, United States Naval Academy, Clayton Watts and Spencer Watts, Alpharetta, GA, Cole M. Duckworth, Champaign, Ill, Rachel L. Duckworth, Springfield, Mo. Her 2 sisters: Marjorie Z.(Tom) Yokley; Carolyn (Mike) Hutchko; and a large group of nieces and nephews.
Those preceded in death include her parents, a brother, Donald A. Wadell, Sr. and his wife Gladys, and her son-in-law Michael A. Duckworth.
Visitation was Sunday, September 27, 2:00-4:00 p.m.; and Monday, September 28, 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Graveside services followed at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Downing, Jr. officiating. Grandchildren served as pallbearers.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
