Lauretta Hess Pollock, 91, formerly of Waynesboro, PA and Millersville, PA, passed on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 with her family by her side at the Brethren Village, Lititz, PA. She was known by many as “Dotty”, as she was one of 13 children to the late Herman and Iva Hess of Waynesboro, and the first little daughter (Dotty) born after five consecutive boys. Dotty was born on the farm on January 28, 1926.
She graduated from Washington Township High School in 1943, and attended Beulah College in Upland, California and then the Waynesboro Business College. While attending business college, she was also employed by Landis Tool company and then by the Waynesboro Auto Parts, where she met her husband.
She married Robert Hugh Pollock from Punxsutawney, PA in 1952 and took on the roles of bookkeeper and secretary for the growing family business, Hagerstown Cash Register, Inc. started by Bob three years earlier. They had four children - Jeanie, Darcy, Lori, and Steve. While they started their family in Hagerstown, they made their home in Abbottstown, PA for 15 years together with company branches in Hagerstown, York, and Winchester. She moved back to Waynesboro and has lived independently since 1977 when Bob was killed in a mid-air collision flying his private plane home from a business trip, shortly after their 25th wedding anniversary. Dotty continued in the family business as CFO until she sold the business a few years later.
Dotty’s biggest joy was family - she looked forward to creating and spending special times with her brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren and extended family. She could always be counted on in times of need.
Dotty is survived by her four children. - Jean Sauer and her husband Anthony Sauer of Fredericksburg, TX, Darcy Pollock of Millersville, PA, Lori Pollock Schmittle and her husband Mark Schmittle of Landenberg, PA, and Stephen Pollock and his wife Holly Hartman of Lancaster, PA; 11 grandchildren (John, Anna and her husband Trent, Katy, Sarah, and Abby, Zach, Jana, Lauren, Lindsay, Matt, and Ben; 3 great-grandchildren (Aiden, Shyla, and Faith); sister Lois Heintzelman and husband Edwin Heintzelman; and brother Carroll Hess and wife Velma.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 29, 2017 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA. Burial will follow at Ringgold Cemetery, Ringgold, MD.
