Lucille spent her early years in Petersburg, NY. Her parents were Elmer F. Smith and Jessie Jones. She had large blue eyes and thick red hair. Her red hair probably was inherited from her mother who died in her twenties.
Most of her ancestors arrived in Colonial America during the 1600's. Many of them were founders of coastal towns in Rhode Island. Several of her ancestors were historically significant ministers (Baptist and SDA.)
Lucille and Walter purchased a large farm in Ashburnham. It had a huge home on the property that was built (in part) before the Civil War. They called their home Red Gables. They operated it as an inn for decades.
