HARPE, Lula Bettie
b: Apr 8 1881, LaRue Co, KY
d: 1938, Bloomington, McLean Co, IL
bur: Bear Creek Cemetery, Bear Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Wilkinson Funeral Home, Clinton, MO (Historical)
Clinton MO - Miss Lula Harpe, long a resident of LaDue, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Hubert Whitfield, of Bloomington, Ill., at 9:30 p. m. Monday. Miss Harpe had been ill the past six months with diabetes and complications that had weakened and shortened her gentle, happy life. She had gone with her sister to Bloomington following the death of their father, the late R. T. Harpe, who died but a month ago. Lula Betty Harpe was born April 8, 1881, in LaRue County, Ky., the daughter of R. T. Harpe and Nannie B. Harpe, who came to Missouri in 1885 to the LaDue community, living in the immediate vicinity the remainder of their lives. Miss Lula was educated in the rural schools near LaDue during the years her father was actively engaged in farming and later in the LaDue schools. She found outlet for her Christian spirit in the Methodist church, drawing comfort and happiness from its contacts. As a young woman she took a position with the Fred Harvey Hotels in New Mexico and Arizona, holding it with capability and benefit to her employers for some 15 years when she gave up her business to return to LaDue to help look after her father in his declining years. Her happy presence in the home, where her small figure hurried about, lent a cheer to her father and the stepmother, who survives her. She was capable and responsible, unselfish and devoted, a fine character whose well lived life leaves its own memorial. Miss Harpe is survived by the above mentioned stepmother who for many years operated a successful hotel at LaDue and continues her residence there, one sister, Mrs. Whitfield, Bloomington, Ill., and two brothers, Forrest E. Harpe of Lawton, Okla., and Charlie W. Harpe of Winslow, Ariz., who was in LaDue for Thanksgiving with his father. He was unable to come for the services. The funeral was held Wednesday at Ladue, just a month to the day after the father's burial. Interment at Bear Creek cemetery beside others of her family. Wilkinson funeral service in charge.
