George was oldest of three children; siblings were John Harris (1850-1878); and Oscar Howard (1854-1934).

George entered Civil War, age 18, September 1, 1861, Richmond VA, joining Co C 13th Alabama Infantry. He served under leadership of Col. Osceola Kyle, Camp Winder and under Gen.Geddy with Tennessee army. Later, he was with Co C 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers under direction of Col. M.W. Hannon and Gen. Joe Wheeler. When Union Gen. W.T. Sherman reached Atlanta, the 53rd was the principal force engaged in the air raid in Sherman's rear, taking part in the last operations of the war. The 53rd AL surrendered with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at Durham Station, Orange Co NC, 26 April 1865.

After Civil War, George attended Atlanta Medical School, Atlanta, GA. He married Mary Floride Speer, December 7, 1866, Elmore Co AL. In 1867, George moved his wife and wife's parents to Wetumpka, Coosa Co AL where his parents, Dr. John and Amelia Milner lived. There, he was licensed to practice medicine. The family moved to Henderson, Rusk Co TX in 1868, later moving to Hopkins Co TX, then Wood Co TX where his parents were soon to follow.

George Wimberly Cotton Milner was primarily a physician in the Winnsboro area, but was also a "lender of money" charging interest, and keeping his money in a trunk. He believed in educating his children; his cousin, Robert Toombs Milner, was, at one time, President of Texas A & M University, Bryan, Brazos Co TX.
