Originally Woodward, changed 1680's by the sons of Walter, it is believed that Wood-ward meant keeper of the wood, so in a new land where wood was plentiful and free, the sons of Walter changed the surname. many Woodworth accounts wrongly confuse father Benjamin as the one who fought in King Phillips War and died, wrong Ben, most likely the son of Walter Jr of Scituate, MA who stayed living there.
