He was dubbed "Walkin' Lawton" for walking across Florida in 1970 during his first United States Senate campaign. Served as Governor of Florida from 1991 to 1998. He died 23 days before leaving office, being found dead in his exercise room. His body was relocated to his family's estate in rural Leon County, Florida, and that grave site is inaccessible to the public.
