Hotel Developer. She transformed a Catskills family hotel into Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel. Before that, her first job, at the age of thirteen, was sewing buttonholes at a factory, earning a weekly wage of $1.50. To provide for the family, her father bought a little farm house in 1914 in the Catskills. It was very run-down. Although married, Jennie moved to the Catskills to help with the farm, where it was apparent the farm would never be successful. Instead, they began taking in paying guests form New York. Jennie’s warmth and personality helped to make it a success. Even without electricity, heat or indoor plumbing, her mother was a good kosher cook and guests were pleased with the food and service. By 1919, the family had bought a new piece of property in nearby Liberty, New York. By 1931, the resort had expanded to 1,300 acres. At its peak, the resort had many amenities, including an 18-hole golf course, a 1,700-seat theater, and winter sports. The first artificially made snow in the U.S. covered their ski slopes. During the war, she gave away more than 3,500 five-day visits to servicemen and seeing an opportunity, Jennie agreed to a suggestion of offering a free honeymoon stay to any couple that had met at the hotel. Eddie Fisher got his start at Grossinger’s when he was spotted by guest Eddie Cantor. Fisher and first wife, Debbie Reynold’s honeymooned here. In 1964, she stepped down from her role in administration. Grossinger’s had expanded to thirty-five buildings encompassing twelve hundred acres. The resort hosted as many as 150,000 guests a year. The main hotel closed in 1986. Jennie received a number of awards as a noted philanthropist to both Jewish and non-Jewish causes in her lifetime. “Jennie and The Story of Grossinger's” by Joel Pomerantz published in 1970, is the only accurate and detailed biography of her life.
