He left home in Ohio when he was 14 and came to Monticello. He attended Brookston Academy and became a teacher. Then he turned his attention to the law and became an attorney. He later became a state senator and served for two terms. He was appointed by President Grover Cleveland to served in the Attorney General's office. He married Mary Woltz on July 3, 1877. Sellers was the largest donor to the Monticello Library fund drive in 1906 with 173 titles.
