Anchorage Mayor. He served as the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1967 to 1981. He served in the United States Army during the Second World War, defending the Aleutian Islands from Japanese advancement. Prior to serving as mayor, he served as a member of the Fairbanks and Anchorage city councils. He was appointed to the Alaska State House of Representatives following the vacancy of William H. Sanders to the state superior court. He effectively lobbied the state legislature for funds for the construction of the Egan Civic and Convention Center, the Loussac Library, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Sullivan Sports Arena. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree in public administration from the University of Alaska, and served on a number of civic boards. Following his political career he served as a senior vice president of Western Airlines and as a consultant for the Sullivan Group. He was the son of former Valdez Mayor Viola (Murray) Sullivan, Alaska's first woman mayor, and the father of current Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan. He died from complications of lung cancer at the age of 87.
