Born at the Kickapoo Indian Mission (Methodist) in what would become Leavenworth Co, Gerard has the distinction of being the first white male child born in territorial Kansas. Sometime later he and his family moved to the Shawnee Indian Mission in Johnson Co Ks where his father established and built the Manual Labor School. His mother Sarah died and is buried there. Then Gerard attended and graduated at the Methodist school established and built by his father in Arcadia, Iron Co Mo. Soon afterward, he studied at Cinncinnati College of Medicine and Surgery becoming a licensed physician. He returned to practice in Arcadia and served in the Civil War for Gen Price and Gen Jeff Thomas in the Confederate Army. After the war he returned to Elk City, Montgomery Co, Ks in 1888. He never seemed to take much of a part in politics, voted mainly for the democratic ticket, and he was a man of strong convictions. He was a member of the Methodist congregation and a Mason.

It has been found in William W Cone's historical sketch of Shawnee Co Kansas published in 1877 that Gerard may not have been the first white male child born in territorial Kansas. He states that one Col Alexander S Johnson was born at the Shawnee Mission Methodist Mission in now Johnson Co on July 11, 1832. It is believed that Alexander was still residing in Topeka when this historical sketch was printed.
