Everett J. Watkins, 98 years of age, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 24, 2009. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. today, September 27, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Ardmore.


Everett was born on April 27, 1911, in Aylesworth, Oklahoma, to Calvin D. and Exie Dunham Watkins. He graduated from Ardmore High School. He later joined the Air Force and served his country from 1943 until the end of World War II.


He married Bliss McCullough on November 28, 1935, and they enjoyed 72 years of marriage before her death in 2007. They are now united in heaven. Everett was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Freda Peay.


Everett started Watkins Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1941, and retired in 2004. His son, Lynn, continues to run the family business.


Everett was a pillar of the golfing community. He served as President of the Board of Directors of Dornick Hills Country Club and won the Club Championship many times. He also won the Oklahoma State Seniors twice and was a runner-up twice.


Everett enjoyed traveling and playing golf with his wife, Bliss. He enjoyed working in his yard as well. He was a devoted member of his Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Ardmore.


Everett was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family. He is survived by his son Lynn Watkins and wife, Beverly, of Ardmore, Okla.; grandchildren, Shannon Holmes and husband, Ed, of Chatham, New Jersey, Brooke Ross and husband, Carter, Tanner Watkins and wife, Courtney, all of Fort Worth, Texas. He adored his great-grandchildren, Hailey Bliss Holmes, Holden Wesley Holmes, Carlisle Brooke Ross, Luke Everett Ross, and Adeline Carter Ross.


Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home.
