Jane Adams was born 27 August 1823 at Stoke Albany, Northampton, England, to Poyntz Adams and Mary Stain Adams. She was the oldest of their ten children. Her father was a physician and surgeon, who practiced medicine at Stoke Albany and Wilbarston.
In 1842 Dr. Poyntz Adams, with his wife Mary and their ten children, left England to go to South Africa as colonists.
When John Stock met Jane and her daughter, Mary Ann, he fell in love with them both. John and Jane were married 14 February 1844 at Uitenhage. They made their first home in Port Elizabeth.
…
eight other children were born to them while living in Port Elizabeth: John William Edwin (known as J. W. E. or Edwin), Jane Susanna, Elizabeth, Richard Poyntz, Robert Wallace, Sarah Wilkinson, Jessie Esther and Maria Josephine.
…
On 27 March 1860, John and Jane Stock and "their" nine children (including Mary Ann Adams, who married William Stokes), bade farewell to their possessions, servants and pets and set sail on the sailing ship "Alacrity". Twenty weeks later they arrived in Boston.
From Boston, they traveled to Niagara Falls, then by rail and river boat to Omaha and the rest of the way to Utah by wagon. They arrived in Salt Lake Valley on 4 October 1860, six months and eight days after setting sail from South Africa.
… Three months after their arrival, on 4 January 1861, Jane gave birth to their tenth child, Ephraim.
… in April, 1864, Brigham Young called John Stock to take his families and go with Apostle Charles C Rich to colonize the Bear Lake Valley.
… It was here that Jane's eleventh child, Claudia Ellen, was born that fall (12 October 1864).
Jane never recovered fully from the birth of this last child. After being ill all winter and spring, Jane Adams died on 13 May 1865 in Paris. She was the first white woman to be buried in the Paris Cemetery.
