Susan Mitchell Fletcher, 48, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, in her home following a courageous battle with health issues.

Mrs. Fletcher was born Dec. 7, 1961, in Little Rock to Fred and Mary Ann Mitchell. She was raised in Fort Smith where she was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She graduated from Southside High School in 1980. She attended the University of Central Arkansas, where she majored in speech and communications. An accomplished actress, she had numerous leading roles in the UCA theater productions, including Regina in "Little Foxes" and Jane in "Stop the World I Want To Get Off." She was a member of the national theater fraternity Alpha Psi Omega. In 1986, while doing summer theater at the Granbury Opera House, she met her future husband, Mike Fletcher. The two were married in December of 1987. In 1989, the couple moved to Emporia, Kansas, where she had two sons, Benjamin and Alexander. She completed her education at Emporia State University, graduating with a degree in speech and communications in 1990. She was active in the Emporia Community Theater, acting in numerous productions and serving as its director. In 1999, the family moved to Cary, North Carolina. In Cary, she worked for the school of communication arts, was active in her sons' school PTA, and volunteering for Edwards/Kerry presidential campaign. In 2008, the family moved to Columbia, Missouri. In Columbia, she volunteered for the Obama presidential campaign.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Fletcher; two sons, Benjamin and Alexander of the home; her parents, Fred and Mary Ann Mitchell of Fort Smith; her brother, Les Mitchell and sister-in-law, Linda Mitchell and niece, all of Paris, Arkansas.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at the Temple Baptist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.

Visitation will be today, Sept. 27, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Mansfield.
