Capt. G. L. Hogg Was Sailor on Great Lakes More Than 20 Years. Captain George L. Hogg, veteran lake captain and old time resident of Chicago, passed away at his home, 7710 Emerald ave., Thursday afternoon, December 8, after a short illness. He was 84 years old. Although advanced in years, Mr. Hogg enjoyed excellent health and possessed an unusually alert mentality up to the time he was stricken two weeks ago.
Taking up sailing at the age of 14, Captain Hogg spent all his active years on the ocean and the Great Lakes. He was born in Scotland, September 6, 1843. In 1867 he moved to Buffalo, N. Y. and two years later became a citizen of the United States. For many years, he was employed on ocean steamers, touching at all the largest ports of the world. After coming to Chicago, he entered the service of the Leigh Navigation company and was in command of vessels on the Great Lakes for more than 20 years.
Captain Hogg was married twice. His second wife, the former Mary Marra of Paisley, Ontario, Canada, survives him. He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Weber, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Danao, and Mrs. Ann Munroe.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from his late residence, under the auspices of Mizpah lodge, A. F. and A. M. The Rev. Clinton C. Cox officiated. Burial was at Mount Greenwood cemetery
