Son of Amos & Margaret Fletcher Armsby. Graduate of Amherst College of 1842 and served in the Congregational Church. Married on 3 May 1846 to Hannah Van Ingen and they had one child, Sherman Armsby. She died in 1848. He then married Eliza Lee Hale and they were the parents of Clarence, Alice and Henrietta. He was known as the "grand old man" and during his thirty-one year's residence in Council Grove, christenings, marriages, funerals and public gatherings were incomplete without his services or ministrations. Served as Chaplain of the Eighth Minnesota volunteer regiment during the Civil War.
