FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZ. — Dr. Thomas Macklin Moss, 51, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2007, following a courageous battle with leukemia.

Tom was born on Oct. 31, 1955, in Shelby. During his youth, he actively participated in competitive swimming, cross country running, and boy scouts, eventually attaining the honor of Eagle Scout.

After graduating from Shelby High School in 1974, he completed his undergraduate and medical school training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he lettered in Varsity Swimming. He practiced medicine for the past 23 years as a family practice physician, the last several, at Desert Community Medical Associates, in Fountain Hills.

In addition to his passion for medicine, Tom was a musician and songwriter, who wrote and produced an inspirational CD, Glad To Be Here, dealing with his struggles with leukemia. Tom's songs brought humor and hope to others facing similar challenges.

Tom's true loves in life were his family and friends. He was a caring and wonderful son, husband, father, brother, and friend. We will all miss his gentle spirit, his quick wit, his laughter, and his excitement for life.

Tom will be forever remembered by so many people — his beloved wife and best friend of 21 years, Jude; his three daughters, Andrea, Jakki, and Chaya; Jakki's fiancé, Chad Carlson; his father and mother, Dr. M. L. Thomas and Mary Louise Moss; his sister, Dr. Carol Moss Bridges and her husband, Jay, and their children, Julian, Alston, and Caroline. Tom also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends whose lives he impacted in so many ways.

The family would like to thank all of his patients, colleagues, and staff for their loyalty, friendship, and support. It was Tom's wish that his medical center remain open to continue to care for his patients and the people of Fountain Hills. He was happy to be able to pass the torch to Dr. Vineet Singla, knowing his patients would be well cared for by someone he respected.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service at a reception in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial service: Tuesday in Fountain Hills, Ariz.

Celebration of Life: Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church

Officiated by: The Rev. Allan Huff

Funeral home: Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home
