SOUTH BEND - Donald S. Cottrell, 86, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 12:28 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2009, in the Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. Mr. Cottrell was born on September 17, 1923, in South Bend, to the late Samuel and Thelma (Sensac) Cottrell.
On September 7, 1946, in South Bend, he married Ruth Barbara Simmerman, who survives. Along with his wife, Ruth of 63 years, Don is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick D. and Gloria Cottrell of South Bend; grandson, Paul and his wife, Lenore Cottrell of Cave Springs, Arkansas; and one great-granddaughter, Juliana Cottrell. One brother, Eldon "John" Senour of South Bend also survives.
One son, Gary M. Cottrell, preceded him in death on September 25, 1996.
Mr. Cottrell was a 1941 graduate of South Bend Central Catholic High School. He joined the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army and served from 1943-1946. Mr. Cottrell also served the City of South Bend, joining the South Bend Police Department on March 1, 1949, and retiring on July 1, 1975.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Don Neely will officiate. Military graveside services will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may visit with the family from 4-6 p.m. today, September 27th, in the funeral home, and one hour prior to services on Monday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Donald S.
