SHELBY - Mr. William F. Champion, 80, of 307 Peach St., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Shiver Fay and Patsy Sepaugh Champion. He served with the Army Air Corps 609th Material Squadron 385th Service Group in the South Pacific during World War II. He was the retired owner of William Champion Plumbing Contractors. He belonged to Churchill Drive Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, Sunday school superintendent and choir member.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Champion, and a sister, Louise Mintz.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gladden Champion; a son and daughter-in-law, William F. Jr. and Evelyn Champion of Shelby; a daughter, Renee Champion Bridges of Shelby; a brother, Jack Champion of Clinton, Tenn.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Rebecca and Lee Johnson of Shelby and Robin and Andy Scoggins of Kings Mountain; and one great-grandchild, Katelyn Latham.

A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with the Revs. Jim Rice and Jerry Helmes officiating.
