Hugh McFarland was born to William and Henrietta [Sullivan] McFarland and grew up in the Beltzhoover section of Pittsburgh. He attended the South Hills High School.
In June, 1941 he married Delores Schu, daughter of William Schu and Anna [Larkin] Schu. and moved to the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Robert joined the US Army Air Corps in February 1943. He was assigned to the 51st Troop Transport Squadron, 62nd Troop Transport Group. He was a co-pilot on C-47 Sky Trains. He was sent overseas in October, 1944 and stationed in Northern Italy at the Malignano Airfield.
On November 12, 1944 he was on a mission to Yugoslavia to deliver supplies to the partisans. The plane flew over some newly placed anti-aircraft guns and took some fire. Bad weather forced the plane to turn around. On the return flight, the plane was either hit by more flak, or suffered a mechanical failure and crashed on Rab Island in Croatia.
A Yugoslav interpreter on the flight was able to parachute to the water and swam to safety. He observed men removing the bodies and burying them. After the war the bodies were recovered and re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
2LT McFarland left behind his widow, Delores, and son William Dennis. His parents, and his brother William John. Delores remarried (Fleming) and moved to Florida.
