Upon graduation he was promoted in the Army to a Brevet 2nd Lt, Jul 1,1842 in the 3rd Infantry. 2nd Lt, 8th Infantry, Oct 10,1842. He served in garrison at Fort Shannon,Fla, 1842, and at Fort King,Fla, 1842 to 1843. He resigned,Jul 1,1843.

Commissioned into the 39th PA Infantry. Commanded, 3rd Brigade, McCall's Division, Army of the Potomac, Oct to Nov 1861. Resigned, May 9,1862 with physical health problems.
