Mary "Virginia" Stribling Blackshear passed away after several years of declining health from cancer at the age of 76. Born in Macon, Ga., at age 4 she moved to St. Simons Island, where she developed into one of Georgia's true beauties. She leaves behind many friends on St. Simons Island where she grew up, attended Glynn Academy and worked at the Sea Island Beach Club, where she taught swimming. While attending the University of Georgia, Mrs. Blackshear was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, the water ballet swim team and was "Miss Pandora." In her adult life, she was an avid sports fan and gifted athlete. Her playing careers included championships in golf and tennis. She later went on to head up the rules committee for the Georgia Women's Golf Association for many years. Her more recent years have been devoted to the support of her grandson David's soccer career and granddaughter Caroline's equestrian events. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, David P. Blackshear of Atlanta; daughter, Lynn B. Fallin and her husband, Richard, of Duluth; son, David S. Blackshear and his wife, Allyson, of St. Simons Island; grandson, David P. Blackshear II, and granddaughter, Caroline R. Blackshear, both of St. Simons Island; brother, Guerry Boone Stribling and his wife, Sandra, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the legendary boxer W.L. "Young" Stribling and Clara Virginia Kinney Stribling. "Sis" Stribling Blackshear inherited his zest for life and the satisfaction of good competition as a player and as a spectator. The Bulldog Nation has lost one of its most loyal supporters. "G.D." . She was predeceased by her brother William L. Stribling, III (1927-1977) and followed in death by her brother Guerry Boone Stribling (1933-2009). She is deeply missed.
