Mary Elizabeth Fowler, whose name may originally have been Margaret, was a daughter of Thomas Jefferson Fowler and his wife Aurelia/Artelia O'Kelly. She married William Brantley York (1849-1918) around 1872. He was a son of Rev. R. Brantley York and his second wife Mary Wells Lineberry.

Mary Elizabeth and William apparently did not have children of their own, but adopted Pattie P. York (1883-1941). Pattie married Theron Clement Farrell (1876-1946), who was a son of Mary Elizabeth's sister Rebecca Octavia Fowler and her husband James Atlas Farrell.
