An old photograph of an elderly couple posed before the civil war has been judged most outstanding of Knoxvillians collections of old pictures.

An eager young confederate soldier who had his picture made in uniform and a little girl pictured with her pet goose were judged second and third prize in Miller Store's old photograph contest.

The picture of the old couple was entered by their great-granddaughter, Mrs. L. Gale Gardner of Knoxville. They were John and Mary Morton of near Maryville, grandparent of Ben Morton, former Mayor of Knoxville. The grandfather was a direct descendent of John Morton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

They are pictured with hands clasped affectionately, she with a twinkle in her Irish eyes. Her husband is dressed in a suit made of cloth that his wife spun and wove.

The old couple were parents of 15 children, and if that were not enough, they adopted two other fatherless children and brought them to their big log cabin home.

The wife spun and wove cloth for all this huge family. Her descendents recall that in spite of all her hands, when she died at the age of 92, were as pretty and soft as a girl's.

Among other descendents of the old couple are their son, John Morton, who was captain during the Civil War and one of the first graduates from Carson-Newman College and his daughter, Mrs. John Hitch. Dr. Wade Morton, San Francisco surgeon is a grandson.

The claims of relation to John Morton, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, are unfounded.

The photo caption reads:

'East Tennessee Gothic' might be the title of the picture of this couple pictured many years ago. The picture won 1st place in Miller Sore Co.'s old picture contest. They were Mr. and Mrs. John Morton, great-grandparents of Mrs. L Gale Gardner, who entered the picture, and grandparents of former mayor Ben Morton.

Grave Marker of Mary Wells Morton, wife of John Morton. Mary and John had fifteen children, several of whom were leaders in their respective communities. The notation of "OUR MOTHER" on the marker denoted the children's recognition of the tenderness they felt for Mary Wells. The finger pointed heavenward indicates her eternal home and her desire for others to follow Christ in the way she had done in life.
