Looking carefully at the name of the town of his birth inscribed on his headstone, there is an umlaut above the "o", i.e. "ö". Unter Wölhingen / Unter Wörhingen is spelled in such a way that it may indicate a village or neighborhood of the town of Vöhringen in Württemberg, now Baden-Württemberg. It could possibly indicate Vöhringen, Bavaria, but there was less interchange between W and V in their regional writing conventions.

Johan Jacob Rupple is better known to history as Lieutenant Jacob Rupley.

He emigrated to America in ship "Phoenix" from Rotterdam, Commander Wm. Wilson. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 30 September 1743 at the age of nineteen. He served as Ensign of Capt. Joseph Wright's Company, Col. Matthias Slough's Battalion of Lancaster County, 11 September 1776. (Penna. Archives 3rd Series Vol. XXIII, page 427).

In 1777 he enlisted as a Private in Capt. James Laird's Company, 3rd Battalion of Cumberland County Militia. Jacob Rupley was Lieutenant of 7th Company in Capt. John Carothers' Company, 3rd Battalion of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia, 10 May 1780 - Lt. Col. Samuel Irvin Commanding. (Penna. Archives 2nd Series Vol. XIV, page 442).

In Pennsylvania Archives 5th Series, Vol. VI, page 217, see the same record of service. Following the war he lived in Cumberland County. He and his family are buried in the Poplar Church Graveyard, Pennsboro, Cumberland County.
