Of Local Interest

Jeff Hunt went to Pauls Valley Tuesday and joined the contingent which left there for Camp Pike, Ark. This makes four sons of Mr. And Mrs. T. J. Hunt now in the service of their country, viz: Ed, Claude, Price and Jeff. To our knowledge this is the greatest contribution of any family in this vicinity. Several families have furnished three sons, among the number being Postmaster Parker and Mail Carrier Wise. In a card to his parents, Price Hunt, who went to Camp Cody in June, writes that he is now at Camp Dix, New Jersey; that they were five days on the road; that they like the place fine. He says he and Vernal Crawford still are together.

Thos. J. Hunt,
Pioneer Davisite
Dies at Age of 94

Thos J. Hunt, one of Davis' oldest citizens and resident of this vicinity for half a century, passed away peacefully at his home in this city at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 1951, at the age of 94 years and 7 months.

Death was due to natural causes incident to his advanced age. He had been confined to his bed most of the time the past four months.

Services were held at the Methodist church at 3 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the pastor Rev. M. Whittington, assisted by Rev. Geo. L. Hart of First Baptist church.

Bearers of the body were Jeff Ayers, Joe Thomas Ayers, H. G. Smith, James Ayers, Fred Ayers and Charles Ayers, mot of them grandsons of the deceased.

Interment was in Green Hill cemetery beside his wife who preceded him in death. Bahner funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Jefferson Hunt was born in Lauderdale county near Florence, Alabama, October 17, 1856. He was married to Sarah Ellen Box Sept. 14, 1878, in Oakland, Ala. From there they moved to Elgin, Texas, and came to the Indian Territory in 1902, settling west of Davis and later moved to town. He was engaged in farming until about 12 years ago when his health began to fail. He joined the Methodist church when 15 years of age.

His wife preceded him in death 12 years. To this union eight boys and two girls were born. Two died in infancy and one son, Chas. E. gave his life for his country on the battlefield of France during World war I.

Mr. Hunt leaves to mourn his going, five sons, Jeff Hunt in Vontana, Calif.; George, Price, Claude and Andrew Hunt of Davis, Okla.; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Ayers and Mrs. Mae Oakley, both of Davis; a sister, Mrs. Mattie Wesson, age 92, Austin, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In his death the community has lost one of its finest citizens – a noble character who was loved by all who knew him.

The same night Mr. Hunt passed away, relatives received information of the death of his nephew, Andrew Hunt in San Antonio, Texas. The deceased was 65 or 70 years of age and leaves a wife and two children. He was a half brother of Mrs. Joe West of this city.
